The Sawtooth Roof made its first appearance in 1827 in the Machine Age for industrial buildings.A more modified adaptation was adopted for residential use by architects in an attempt by designers to use Palm Springs as an experiment lab for new ideas labeled Desert Modernism.This new roof design were also known by other names such as Folded-Plate Roof Line or a Zig Zag Roof.The most famous example in Palm Springs was completed by Donald Wexler in 1962.While this “accordion” like appearance is known for its dramatic visual, it was its climate functionality that gave birth to its popularity in the 1900’s.
